![]() A good Wordle start word should have used a couple, but if they don't feature you might well want to try another one or two on your next go. Vowels obviously need consideration too: not all Wordle answers will contain more than one, but plenty do, and some even have three. Some options are far more common than others - for instance, SH, ST, CR and CH all feature frequently. Secondly, think about combinations, especially at the start and end. But clever people (not me) have done the math and identified the best start words based on both frequency in English and frequency among Wordle answers. Without one, you'll be scrabbling around in the dark trying (and possibly failing) to find the right five letters (or possibly fewer) out of the 26 possibles. ![]() I can't stress this enough - it makes a massive difference. The best tip I can give is to use one of the best Wordle start words. If you're looking for a list of older Wordle answers, we can also help. * These were MOUSE, DOUSE, NOISE, DOWSE and HOUSE. I picked right with the latter and all my letters turned green. With my remaining characters, it was a straight choice between DOWSE and NOISE. This meant I now had three green letters and the word had to be ?O?SE. I now knew that 'O' had to sit in second or fourth place, and second seemed more likely so I tried HOUSE. I opted for SLOPE, which tests two of them, and it was pretty effective, turning 'S' yellow and ruling out 'O' in a second position. On my second turn, my instinct is to try and play as many of the next most common letters (i.e: 'L', 'I', 'S', 'N' and 'C') as possible. If you played CLONE, only the correct answer would be left over. Of course, many of WordleBot's best Wordle start words were more efficient including SLATE (32 possible answers) and SPILT (16). ![]() That gifted me a green 'E' and a yellow 'O' from my first turn, leaving 54 possible answers. In any case, my journey to a four-turn win began with ORATE which contains all five of the most common Wordle letters. I think it's because so few five-letter words have 'I' directly following 'O'. ![]() Despite the presence of three vowels and no rare letters (all of them are in the top nine most common), I found today's puzzle a little tricky. Reading this in a later time zone? The Wordle answer for game #865 was NOISE. With that in mind, UNTIL stood out as the clear answer. It clearly wasn't going to sit in last or third position with that 'I', so I began thinking of words that begin 'UN'. 'T' had to sit in second or third position, but it was the 'U' that really interested me. After a period spent racking my brains, I came up with TUNIC, which finally gave me a green letter ('I') and an additional yellow with 'U'. Unfortunately, I was going to play the wrong one first. Two answers were left, according to WordleBot. It was extremely effective, ruling out 'T' in last place and giving me two additional yellows in the form of 'I' and 'N'. SKINT felt reasonably good, as it featured three of them, while moving 'T' to a new position. On my next move, I wanted to test more common letters, and the next most likely candidates are 'L', 'I', 'S', 'N' and 'C'. ![]()
